A stanza from The Boxer keeps running through my head…
In the clearing stands a boxer,
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev’ry glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame,
“I am leaving, I am leaving”
But the fighter still remains
Yes. Yes he does.
And this naturally, takes me to The Sounds of Silence…
Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted
In my brain still remains
Within the sound of silenceIn restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
A neon light that split the night
And touched the sound of silenceAnd in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share and no one dared
Disturb the sound of silenceFools said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silenceAnd the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the signs said, ‘The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls and tenement halls’
And whispered in the sounds of silence
And, in my own mind, I live in Kathy’s song…
I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and wallsAnd from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain drenched streets
To [New]England where my heart liesMy mind’s distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you’re asleep
Kiss you when you start your dayAnd as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There before the grace of you , go I
The boxer still remains honey – always..xo

Me too Jules…but fitting in some laughter too. One of his greatest gifts was his ability to laugh, and he taught us all well. It’s the best of him, so it’s what we do to honor him. xoxo

All sweet favs of mine as well…especially the sound of silence as my Dad who passed almost 3 years ago used to play that 8 track over and over ~ Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Simon and Garfunkel. Every time I hear those songs, I think of him. Funny how we both think of our Dads with those songs. Sending you big hugs as always, strength and friendship. I am here for you. xo
